Then there came a cold snap. The temperature went down and down--forty, fifty, sixty degrees below zero. He had no thermometer, but this he knew by the signs and natural phenomena understood by all men in that country--the crackling of water thrown on the snow, the swift sharpness of the bite of the frost, and the rapidity with which his breath froze and coated the canvas walls and roof of the tent. Vainly he fought the cold and strove to maintain his watch on the bank. In his weak condition he was an easy prey, and the frost sank its teeth deep into him before he fled away to the tent and crouched by the fire. His nose and cheeks were frozen and turned black, and his left thumb had frozen inside the mitten. He concluded that he would escape with the loss of the first joint. Dawn broke and merged into day. It was cold and clear. Sixty below zero was Morganson's estimate of the frost. Not a breath stirred the chill Arctic quiet. He sat up suddenly, his muscular tensity increasing the hurt of the scurvy. He had heard the far sound of a man's voice and the faint whining of dogs. He began beating his hands back and forth against his sides. Morganson dropped his rifle (worthless now that the last cartridge was gone) and slid down the bank through the soft snow.

He looked down and saw the snow reddening at his feet. The blood flowed freely as ever. He had not thought the bite was so severe. He controlled his giddiness and stooped to examine the wound. The snow seemed rushing up to meet him, and he recoiled from it as from a blow. He had a panic fear that he might fall down, and after a struggle he managed to stand upright again. I tell you, just give them more and more,
So you’ll never stray far from the mark,
Just seek to confuse them, in the dark:
To keep them happy, that’s hard - for sure.
And now what’s wrong? Delight or Pain?

"What did he say?" asked Dickensen.
"Him say um all the same one man, dat p'liceman," Jimmy interpreted.
Little Dickensen was little, and what of Miss Travis, he felt sorry for having asked the question.
The policeman was sorry for him and stepped into the breach. "I fancy there may be something in his story. I'll take him up to the captain for examination. Tell him to come along with me, Jimmy."
Jimmy indulged in more throaty spasms, and Imber grunted and looked satisfied.

Emily Travis looked pleased.

If jewelry and other products made of precious metals and precious stones, manufactured in the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as those that have undergone restoration (repair), do not correspond to the declared fineness, then with the written consent of the person who presented the products to the Assay Chamber, the imprints of the hallmarks on the products shall be clogged. In this respect, jewelry and other products made of precious metals and precious stones shall be subject to hallmarking with the state hallmark of the next lower fineness than the established.

If jewelry and other products made of precious metals and precious stones imported into the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan, presented for assaying, analysis and hallmarking to the Assay Chamber, have prints of hallmarks that do not correspond to the declared fineness, then with the written consent of the person who presented the products to the Assay Chamber, prints of assay hallmarks on products shall be clogged. In this respect, jewelry and other products made of precious metals and precious stones shall be subject to hallmarking with the state assay mark of the next lower fineness than the established.

If a fineness of a jewelry or other item made of precious metals and precious stones that has undergone restoration (repair) does not correspond to the existing hallmark imprint, then with the written consent of the person who presented the product to the Assay Chamber, the imprint of the hallmark shall be clogged and the product shall be subject to hallmarking with the state assay mark of the next lower fineness than the established.
