38. Here you are, being called to spend in the cause of God. Among you are those who withhold; but whoever withholds is withholding against his own soul. God is the Rich, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people, and they will not be like you. 38Ҳой сизлар! Анавилар! 6. And He will punish the hypocrites, male and female, and the idolaters, male and female, those who harbor evil thoughts about God. 15. Those who lagged behind will say when you depart to collect the gains, “Let us follow you.” They want to change the Word of God. Say, “You will not follow us; God has said so before.” Then they will say, “But you are jealous of us.” In fact, they understand only a little. 15Ўлжалар томон, уларни олиш учун юрганингизда ортда қолганлар: «Қўйиб беринг, биз ҳам сизга эргашамиз», дерлар. 16. Say to the Desert-Arabs who lagged behind, “You will be called against a people of great might; you will fight them, unless they submit. If you obey, God will give you a fine reward. But if you turn away, as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.” 16Ортда қолган аъробийларга: « Катта кучга эга қавмга (қарши) чақирилурсизлар, улар мусулмон бўлгунларича урушурсизлар. 18. God was pleased with the believers, when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, and sent down serenity upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent conquest. 18Батаҳқиқ, Аллоҳ мўминлардан дарахт остида сенга байъат қилаётганларида рози бўлди. 22. If those who disbelieve had fought you, they would have turned back and fled, then found neither protector nor helper. 22Агар кофирлар сизлар билан урушганларида орқага қараб қочар эдилар, сўнгра ўзларига валий ҳам, нусрат бергувчи ҳам топмасдилар.
25. It is they who disbelieved, and barred you from the Sacred Mosque, and prevented the offering from reaching its destination. Were it not for faithful men and faithful women, whom you did not know, you were about to hurt them, and became guilty of an unintentional crime. Thus God admits into His mercy whomever He wills. 26. Those who disbelieved filled their hearts with rage—the rage of the days of ignorance. But God sent His serenity down upon His Messenger, and upon the believers, and imposed on them the words of righteousness—of which they were most worthy and deserving. God is aware of everything. 26Эсла! Куфр келтирганлар қалбларида қизиққонликни жоҳилият қизиққонлигини жойлаганларида, Аллоҳ Ўз сокинлигини Пайғамбарига ва мўминларга туширди ва уларга тақво калимасини лозим кўрди, улар ушбуга ҳақли ва аҳл эдилар. It was dark when the car came to a sudden halt and Abdulla lost the thread of his thoughts. They must have arrived at the prison. What had he been thinking about? Oh yes, the five bright-red oranges he hadn’t been able to give his children, now left in a house where the lights were out. When he was still very young, he’d written a story called ‘Devils’ Dance’ about something terrible that had happened to his father. Could Abdulla have been taken captive by devils, as his father was?

Whether out of annoyance at having to work on New Year’s eve, or because he’d started the festive drinking early, Vinokurov kicked, cursed and beat Abdulla before throwing him into the solitary cell. Abdulla wanted to strangle his tormenter, but his hands were shackled and he hadn’t the courage to use his teeth. He could only bite his lips till they bled.

Had Rahbar given the children the oranges he’d meant for them? Tomorrow (but wasn’t it tomorrow already?) Abdulla had planned to take them to see the New Year fir at the Railway Workers’ Palace, where the biggest and best celebrations were supposed to take place. Last year the children’s favourites had been the trained dogs which answered questions and took turns pulling each other round on sleighs. Would Rahbar take them this time, and would they be allowed in if she did? Might they find themselves turned away at the doors, as the family of an arrested man? His heart sank at the thought.

Chief Minister Hakim kept the gates shut, as he had promised Nasrullo. Nasrullo moved with his elite troops towards Bukhara, but Husayn fired on the rebel army with artillery and rifles. They got as far as the fortress walls, and Husayn fought them at the mint next to the fortress, where they had taken cover.
